In the ever-evolving world of digital content creation, there’s a new generation of entrepreneurs who are leveraging their creativity and passion to carve out successful careers. Joey Gamm, a young videographer borned and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, is one such entrepreneur who has aspirations to make big waves in the rap and sports industry, working with an impressive clientele list of creatives, despite having only started his journey just a year ago. His story is a testament to the incredible force of determination, creativity and the vibrant culture of Philly.
A Passion Turned Profession
Joey Gamm’s incredible journey began just over a year ago with a heartfelt mission: surprising his closest friend, a talented rapper by the name Chase Greene (IG: @chasegreeneee), with an unforgettable gift–funds to hire a videographer for a music video and AirBnB in New York City. Joey took a spontaneous leap by investing in a GoPro to film the entire experience. Armed with the new camera and a burning desire to create, he began experimenting with iMovie. Joey found himself lost in the art of video editing, spending hours upon hours crafting his editing skills as he worked on a behind the scenes vlog for Chase Greene’s music video. One thing that stuck out about Joey was his enjoyment to capture the talents of others. This marked the start of his videography journey.
What began as a simple hobby soon ignited a potential career, and Joey found himself on a life-altering course. It was then that he realized his true calling. Over time, videography not only became a means to share the talents of others but also a creative outlet for himself. Videography turned into a lifestyle.
Starting From Scratch
At the age of 20, armed with a Canon 80D (DSLR camera), a laptop, and a burning ambition, Joey embarked on his entrepreneurial journey. He began by offering his videography services to his friends that happened to be musicians. Starting from scratch meant taking on small, often unpaid gigs to build his portfolio and gain experience. Joey remembers his humble beginnings of shooting music videos with a gopro and portable lighting kit.
The Learning Curve
Joey’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. As a self-taught videographer, he faced a steep learning curve. He invested time in mastering adobe premiere, photoshop, and after effects, and perfecting his videography techniques. In addition to technical skills, Joey also had to navigate the intricacies of running a business, from pricing his services to managing client relationships and marketing himself effectively. He had to build his business from the ground up all by himself while working on his craft as a videographer and editor.
Building a Brand and Reputation
What truly set Joey apart was his unwavering commitment to shaping a distinct personal brand—Made You Look. The brand was inspired by a bumper sticker he once spotted, boasting clever advertising with a tagline that playfully said, “You looked.” Joey’s creativity for crafting such a unique brand identity and logo instantly pushed him into the spotlight.
His unwavering dedication to delivering top-notch videos that not only met but consistently exceeded his clients’ expectations became his hallmark. With each new project, he pushed the boundaries of his creativity, making continuous improvement a driving force in his work. Word-of-mouth referrals and positive reviews flowed in, building Joey’s reputation as a talented videographer, especially within Rhode Island.
Yet, Joey’s ambitions extend beyond the state of Rhode Island. His sights are set on expanding his influence, aiming to take over the City of Brotherly Love and beyond.
Grind Hard (Ft. Joey Gamm)
With platforms like social media, YouTube, and freelance marketplaces, young entrepreneurs have unprecedented access to clients and audiences worldwide. Joey made use of these platforms to showcase his work, attract clients, and build his online presence. Social media, in particular, played a crucial role in helping him reach a global audience. Within a year of diligent effort, Joey found himself earning an impressive roster full of new and returning clients. His portfolio diversified to include fashion stylists, restaurant owners, and even collaborations with up and coming artists. His ability to adapt to different niches and consistently deliver exceptional work became his competitive edge.
Dreams and Nightmares
First and foremost, Joey has a burning desire to collaborate with big name artists in the industry like Meek Mill, D. Sturdy, Leaf Ward, Kur, and Ot7 Quanny but his ambitions extend beyond videography. He has bigger ambitions beyond his grasp at the moment, Joey’s determination knows no limits.
Taking a page from the playbook of Cole Bennet, the visionary behind Lyrical Lemonade, Joey draws boundless inspiration. He has confidence that his brand, “Made You Look,” will transcend geographical borders to become a household name, actively engaging in projects spanning the domains of music, sports, and entertainment. In Joey’s vision, “Made You Look” will evolve into more than just a videography company; it will be engraved into the culture.
